BURPING BOWL- 1990

BACK TO CERAMIC WONDERS

RETURN TO INDEX MORE KINETIC CERAMIC SCULPTURES
The "Burping Bowls", which Clayton Bailey made, beginning in 1968, are kinetic, hydro-pneumatic objects. Each of the bowls contains a submerged ceramic creature, often with bulging bloodshot eyes and snaggly teeth.

The creature periodically lurches up in the water and emits a loud belching sound. A 30- 45 second waiting period between sounds keeps the viewer waiting to see what will happen next.

Apartment dwellers are fond of the Burping Bowl as an alternative to owning a dog or cat. Bowl owners report that they even have to clean-up after them like a live pet.

The Burping Bowl is very nearly an example of "life created out of mud". The creature is carefully balanced, and hinged to the bottom of the bowl. It has a hidden floatation chamber which is slowly filled with air by an aquarium air pump.

The air buoys the creature up in the water, and when the trapped air bubble escapes as a belch, the creature sinks to the bottom again.

By utilizing two or three separate air chambers in the creature, some of the creatures, hiss, hoot, whistle or spit.
