CLAYTON BAILEY'S FIGURATIVE SCULPTURE:

LIFE-SIZE CERAMIC BUST

BACK TO CERAMIC WONDERS RETURN TO INDEX

This life-size ceramic bust depicts Clayton Bailey as an outlaw motorcycle rider wearing the "official colors" of the "Vermillion Velvet (South Dakota) Motorcycle Club". The front of the jacket is decorated with outlaw motorcycle symbols, ribbons, pins and badges.

This fictitious club was created by Bailey in response to rumors that a motorcycle gang had taken up residence at the University in Vermillion, SD, where Bailey taught ceramics in 1968.

In its unfired state, this life-size clay sculpture was used as a mold and model for several latex "outlaw masks". After the masks were made from the clay model, it was glazed and fired as seen here.

Anyone knowing where this ceramic sculpture is presently located, please contact the artist.
