DEMENTED PINHEADS

BACK TO CERAMIC WONDERS WHAT HAPPENED NEXT? RETURN TO INDEX

The culmination of Bailey"s series of cartoon character works of 1970 is the "Demented Pinhead"- 1970 (An edition of 25 slip cast sculptures was made by the artist).

The Demented Pinhead was inspired by Bill Elder's drawing of a mad scientist published in a 1952 issue of Mad Comics.

The Pinhead usually holds an electric light bulb in his hand, and can be used as a lamp. Sometimes a light bulb rises out of his head like a perverse idea. A bit of ceramic brain sometimes oozes out of a crack in the Pinhead's skull. He has a large bulge in his crotch, and in some versions of this edition, his fly is unzipped and he holds his large penis in his hand. It is dripping with a creamy white glaze.

In two "water fountain" versions of this sculpture, the Demented Pinhead stands on a platform and urinates or masterbates into a basin at his feet.

It took Clayton Bailey two years:1970 to 1971 to cast the edition of 25 Pinheads.
