Specimen Bowl- 1978 ceramic, water, light , sound 24" ht. X 14" X 24" |
The series of
Specimen Bowls began in 1972, when Clayton
Bailey and his alter ego, Dr. Gladstone
learned to make thixotropic ceramic "blob
creatures" that floated and bubbled in water
filled laboratory dishes. These blobs are
"bio-ceramic specimens" laced with blood
vessels and tissue.
The ceramic sculpture is meant to be displayed near the front door or the window of home or business to discourage prowlers who might peek in and see the creature's eyes and teeth moving and lunging in the bowl. The bio-ceramic specimen belches and hisses to frighten and intimidate the criminal or unwanted stranger. The bowl is wired to an attached chemical apparatus and to a threatening "black box device" and control panel that illuminates the bowl and warns: Warning: Security Surveillance System.
