wheel-thrown low-fire whiteware

china paint and luster.

This mug is wheel-thrown and modeled to resemble the thin-walled, slip-cast 18th Century English Toby jugs.

It wears a "T" shirt imprinted with the word "SPECIMEN" denoting the artist's obsession in 1972 with the search for kaolithic fossil remains of mythological animals such as Bigfoot..

Prior to creating this Toby jug, the artist made several "jars, jugs and pitchers" depicting the heads of grotesque cartoon characters and ethnic stereotypes.( 1969-1972)

The series of stoneware Jugheads followed... (from 1989 to the present)

Made by Clayton Bailey- 1972
